Does My Company Need a USDOT Number to Create a Fleet Portal Account?

Yes. A valid USDOT number is required during Fleet Portal registration — you'll enter it alongside your company details when creating your account.

When you register a company account on the Route One ELD Fleet Portal, one of the required fields is your USDOT number. This isn't optional — the system will not let you complete registration without it.

What Is a USDOT Number?

A USDOT number is a unique identifier issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to commercial motor carriers operating in interstate commerce. It's separate from your MC number (motor carrier authority), which covers freight-for-hire operations.

Where to Find Your USDOT Number

Your USDOT number appears on your operating authority documents, on your vehicle's cab card, or in the FMCSA portal at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov. It's also printed on the door or cab panel of any vehicle already compliant with FMCSA marking requirements.

Don't Have a USDOT Number Yet?

If your company is new and doesn't have a USDOT number, you'll need to register at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov before completing Fleet Portal registration. USDOT registration is free and typically processes within a few business days.

Where You Enter It During Registration

Go to client.routeoneeld.com/register and complete the company information section. The USDOT field appears alongside your company name and contact details. Once saved, it's associated with your account and cannot be changed without contacting support.

After registration, you'll receive an activation email — the link expires in 72 hours. See what to do if the activation link expires if you need to request a new one.

Your next step is adding vehicles and drivers from the Fleet Portal. If you're an owner-operator setting up both accounts at once, see how to set up both the fleet and driver account simultaneously.
