Do I Need to Turn On the Ignition Before Connecting the ELD to the Driver App?

Yes. The ignition must be on before you connect the ELD device to the driver app. The device needs power from the vehicle to establish a Bluetooth connection and begin recording data.

Yes. The vehicle ignition must be on before you attempt to connect the ELD device to the driver app. The ELD device draws power from the vehicle through the diagnostic port (OBD-II or 9-pin connector) and is only active when the vehicle has power.

Why This Is Required

Without ignition power, the ELD device is off and cannot broadcast a Bluetooth signal. The driver app will not detect the device and pairing cannot start. Turning on the ignition (even without starting the engine on some vehicles) provides the device with the power it needs.

Steps

1. Plug the ELD device into the vehicle's diagnostic port if not already installed. 2. Turn the ignition to the "On" position (accessories on; starting the engine is optional on some vehicles). 3. Wait 10–15 seconds for the device to initialize and begin broadcasting. 4. Open the driver app and proceed with pairing — see how to connect the ELD via QR code or manual entry.

If the App Still Can't Find the Device

If the ignition is on and the app still does not detect the device: - Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on the phone. - Check that the device is fully seated in the port. - Confirm the phone has the required permissions — see what permissions the driver app requires. - Restart the app and try again.

For a complete setup walkthrough, see the ELD installation guide.
