The ELD automatically switches to Driving status once the vehicle exceeds 5 mph. It returns to the previous duty status once speed drops to 0 mph.
Understanding how your ELD switches duty statuses automatically helps you avoid accidental violations and keeps your logs accurate.
The 5 mph Threshold
Your ELD monitors vehicle speed through the engine's ECM. The moment your vehicle exceeds 5 mph, the ELD automatically changes your duty status to Driving. You don't need to tap anything in the app — it happens instantly. See what data the ELD records during driving.
When Driving Ends
Once your vehicle speed drops to 0 mph and stays there, the ELD switches you back to your previous duty status (typically On-Duty Not Driving). If you were On-Duty Not Driving before starting to drive, that's where you'll return.
Personal Conveyance
If you need to move the vehicle for personal reasons (not for work), you can manually set your status to Personal Conveyance (PC). In PC mode, miles driven don't count against your HOS limits. PC must be used appropriately — misuse is a compliance violation.
Yard Move
For on-premises movements, use Yard Move (YM) status. Like PC, yards moves don't count as driving time, but you must be authorized by your carrier to use this status.
