ELD vs. GPS Tracking: Understanding the Difference

Yes. ELD compliance tracking and GPS fleet tracking are separate features that use different devices and subscriptions. ELD tracks HOS and compliance; GPS provides real-time vehicle location. Both can be bundled on Enterprise plans.

ELD compliance and GPS fleet tracking are related but distinct features. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right plan for your operation.

What ELD Does

An ELD connects to your vehicle's engine and records Hours of Service data — driving time, duty status, mileage, and approximate location at duty-status changes. This data is used exclusively for FMCSA HOS compliance. ELD location is approximate (nearest city/town), not street-level.

What GPS Tracking Does

A GPS tracking device provides continuous, real-time street-level location updates, route history, stop detection, idle time monitoring, and speed data. This is used for fleet visibility and operations — not for FMCSA compliance purposes.

Do I Need Both?

Most owner-operators only need ELD. GPS tracking becomes valuable when you manage multiple vehicles and need live visibility, or when brokers and shippers require real-time location sharing beyond what MacroPoint provides.

Bundling

Enterprise plan customers can bundle ELD and GPS tracking for a single monthly rate. Contact our sales team to discuss bundled pricing for your fleet size.
